<image:title>FAQ - Surveys - Tip! How to Avoid Common Pitfalls during the Questionnaire Design and Development Process? Pay attention to four steps: 1) Matching the method to the evaluation question: is a survey the best match? 2) Identifying content and writing questions: what exactly should I ask about? Are there questionnaires that I can use in full or in part? 3) Physical design and layout of the questionnaire. 4) Pre-testing, piloting, and translation.</image:title>

<image:title>FAQ - Qualitative tools - How to approach qualitative research?</image:title>
<image:caption>Qualitative research relies on data obtained by the researcher from first-hand observation, interviews, questionnaires, focus groups, participant-observation, recordings made in natural settings, documents, and artifacts. Presented documents from Humanitarian Research Toolkit aim to provide guidance on how to design, collect, transcribe and analyze qualitative research data.</image:caption>

<image:title>FAQ - Qualitative tools - Ethics and Confidentiality</image:title>
<image:caption>Before starting data collection, check whether you are required to obtain ethical approval from an Institutional Review Board. This is required if you are conducting research with humans. •If you are hiring a transcriber, it is recommended that he/she sign a confidentiality agreement to prevent the disclosure of participants’ personal information. •Researchers will need to determine when personally-identifying information (PII) should be removed from the transcript. This may be at the time of transcription, in which case, transcribers should be informed of what constitutes PII and what placeholders should be used (for instance, with the following notation: [city street]). If in doubt, consult the overseeing Institutional Review Board for advice. •As explained in Qualitative transcription and translation: DOC highly accurate transcripts(with representations of accents and verbal idioms) may risk exposing participants’ identities. Consider this risk when instructing transcribers on the level of detail and representation required for the purposes of the analysis.</image:caption>

<image:title>IRB - What is the IRC Institutional Review Board?</image:title>
<image:caption>The purpose of the IRC Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to protect the rights and welfare of human research subjects enrolled in research conducted by, or under the direction of, the IRC. If you are unsure if your study qualifies as human subjects research, contact humansubjects@rescue.org. Please note that the IRC IRB does not review external studies. The IRC IRB also provides light-touch ethical reviews and approvals innovation/design research. To submit a study protocol to the IRC IRB, submit required forms and documents at humansubjects@rescue.org. To check which documents are required for different types of studies, see scenarios below. The IRB meets on a monthly basis. Meetings take place every fourth Tuesday of the calendar month. Studies are administratively reviewed on a rolling basis. The deadline for submission to the IRB for full board reviews is the second Tuesday of the month. <image:title>Ethics - Upholding Ethical Considerations</image:title>
<image:caption>It is imperative that the highest ethical standards are upheld through each phase of a study ( see Mitigating Ethical Risks: PDF↓). Research ethics ensure that we are accountable to, and build a relationship of trust and mutual respect with, study participants - this relationship is also critical to obtaining high-quality, reliable data. Research ethics also ensure that the public can trust the study findings, and are required for publication. All studies at the IRC are reviewed to ensure that ethical principles are respected. Does your study need IRC’s Institutional Review Board approval or advice? See IRB documents -> and see decision tree below.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The IRC commits to providing the most effective and cost-effective programs to the people we serve. <image:title>Budget - Tip!</image:title>
<image:caption>It is important to budget staff time & resources for the dissemination of research results. On average, dissemination costs between $10,000 and $60,000 for a large evaluation. Dissemination activities are often carried out for approximately 6 months to one year after the endline data is collected. If relevant, also add a budget for baseline dissemination.</image:caption>
